"Navruz"- Essay by Sarvinoz Abduvosiyeva from Uzbekistan
My Uzbek culture is very colorful and has lots of interesting traditional holidays and events. One of them is my favorite holiday called Navruz which means "new day". We celebrate this holiday every year on March 21st.
This is one of the favourite holidays for children because this day is the full of activities, nice traditional dishes and fun. Spring time is special in my country and we start it with celebrating Navruz.
What we do on that day, for example, all family members gather in one house and cook special and yummy traditional and historical Uzbek spring meals, for example Sumalak which is like sweet porridge cooked from green grass and oil, green dumplings and meat pie.
We always go to granny's yardhouse to celebrate Navruz, together with my other aunts' children. We are all kids, 10 children. On that day my grandfather bring us to the hill area in Chimyon and we fly kites, this is very enjoyable. We pick flowers on the hills.
A special part of Navruz is for girls when we wear the national costume adras which is made from silk and cotton and we wear the duppi, a cap worn by girls in our country. I have a red adras, my grandmother made that for me last Navruz.
Sumalak, dumplings and other national meals are eaten when we sit all together around the table and the youngest family members dance to the national music.
I really love Navruz, because I always enjoy this holiday very much. I am already waiting for the next holiday in March.
I read about the origins of Navruz that this is the most historical holiday of not only Uzbekistan but also Central Asia. I think this holiday makes that family members and relatives get together as well as we are all celebrating a special event. Also, after the grey winter, people are bored and want to go outdoors and I think Navruz is the best reason for that.
If we keep celebrating holidays like Navruz, we will keep our national dishes and traditions. This is very important for the future. I wish to invite my international friends for the celebrations of our national Uzbek holiday Navruz to share our culture and traditions.
In the Age category 8 - 11 years, Sarvinoz's essay about the new year traditions in Uzbekistan is commended. Well done!
We simply had to choose your unique essay, as we can feel how much work has gone into putting your ideas into writing. Some of your sentences have been amended for better readability. It is very important to learn about our own and other country's traditions and cultures as they are part of our identity. We are grateful for your story. Congratulations!
